Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl IX

The year was 1975, the day Sunday January 12, the place Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Now this date, time, and place may not have been a world changing event for most people, except for a Pittsburgh Steeler fan. As fans, this is the day we will remember forever.

We grew up in New Castle Pennsylvania a small town about 40 miles north of Pittsburgh. Yes we were Steeler Fans.

Oh the agony of all the previous seasons. Until the Steelers 1974 season when they made it to their 1st Superbowl. This was a true celebration for all Steeler fans.

So we decided to have our 1st ever Super Bowl party with all of our family and friends, we watched and rooted the Steelers to their 1st Super Win as they defeated a worthy opponent that day.

Minnesota led by seasoned quarterback famed #10, Fran Tarkenton and the Purple People Eater defense.

The Vikings finished the 1974 season with a record of 10 wins and 4 loses. Defeating the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams in the playoffs.

The Pittsburgh Steelers led by Terry Bradshaw, and the Steel Curtin defense. The Steelers finished the season with a record of 10 wins 3 loses and 1 tie.

Defeating the Buffalo Bills and the Oakland Raiders in the playoffs.

There couldn't have been a better match up for this game. These two teams had the toughest defenses in the league.

The Vikings defense, known as the Purple People Eaters and the Steelers with the famous Steel Curtin defence.

The 1st half of the game was a defensive battle with the only scoring being a safety (the 1st in super bowl history) giving the Steelers a 2 point lead at half time.

We were all sitting on the edge of our seats just waitng for the 2nd half wondering if disappointment was coming in the 2nd half.

The general feeling was that we were a second half team, this made all of us feel a little better going into the second half of the game. We were all rationalizing if we lost this game at least we made it to the Super Bowl.

On the 2nd half kickoff to the Vikings the Steelers recovered a fumble, this lead to a 9 yard touchdown run by Franco Harris. There was so much excitement in the room it's hard to explain.

We were all breathing a little easier now, and all saying we knew we were a second half team. Why is it that when you're a diehard fan of any sport, you can rationalize things like this.

The Vikings then scored on a blocked punt making the score 9 to 6. Now we were back on the edges of our seats, as it was late in the game and one more score by the Vikings and we would be loosing.

Then the Steelers put together a 66 yard drive to score late in the fourth quarter making the score 16 to 6. We were celebrating then because we knew the game was over.

Our Pittsburgh Steelers who we have stood by for decades had just rewarded us with their 1st Super Bowl win.

This Super Bowl brought family and friends together for a common cause. It was a day that we all remember.

You don't have to wait for some event to gather your family and friends and make some memories.
